Preparing and Planning in Trying Times

There is a lot going on in the world today. From the pandemic to working towards equity to politics, it is easy to feel lost and unprepared. While we as individuals (or this practice) cannot solve the bigger problems (though we try to do our part!), I find that helping as individuals goes a long way towards helping overall. I truly believe that putting in place proper planning can lift burdens, both immediate and future.

Many people who were not previously in high risk jobs now are. While I recommend planning at some level for all adults, people often do not know about why it is important for them or put it off for a long time. Healthcare workers, teachers, grocery store workers, pharmacists, and many more have started thinking more about their own mortality and thus planning.

For individuals, this planning may be as limited as guardianship/conservatorship documents for your minor children or incapacity documents for you. It may also include a Last Will and Testament or a trust. For some, the recommendations will include more complex planning, as my recommendations are always based upon your specific situation and goals. I strive to offer options that I believe will meet your needs and goals while also providing different levels of planning to meet your budget.

For business owners, 2020 may be the first year that you started really thinking about succession planning, but you don’t know what to do about it. Others are starting out on their own or realizing that they should establish a new entity or do tax planning. I can help with that.

For some people, this year has spurred drastic change, from moving to starting their own business. Many of these events should cause you to review any existing plans to ensure they still meet your goals and needs or to consider starting planning. I am happy to discuss your particular situation and goals to see what estate, tax, and/or business planning may be appropriate for your situation.
